After releasing a few teasers over the past few weeks, Overwatch has officially released an origins story video for their newest hero, and fans are stoked. Heroes, welcome Echo to the fold!
In the video, we are introduced to Dr. Mina Liao in what might be the moment of her death. Fans deeply familiar with Overwatch lore might recognize the name as one of the six original founders over Overwatch alongside Soldier: 76, Reaper, Ana, Reinhardt, and Torbjorn. The mysterious death of Liao is explained in our introduction to Echo.
Having created the omnics, Liao joins the original Overwatch in a last act of desperation to fight against her now-evil creations. However, as we now know, Echo is a different kind of omnic. After Liao seemingly dies in an attack on her lab, Echo seems to take over the attitude, mannerisms, and beliefs of her creator in order to continue the fight.

This origins video is not the first time fans have seen Echo. She was first introduced in the McCree cinematic “Reunion” released during Blizzcon 2018. While the video’s purpose was to introduce Ashe and B.O.B., Echo quickly captivated fans. Echo made another appearance in “Zero Hour,” the announcement cinematic for Overwatch 2, which made fans even desperate to have her in the game.
While there has been no official word, most are predicting that Echo will be a healer based on what fans do know of her backstory. An official date for her release, along with her specific skill sets, has yet to be released, but Echo is sure to be available on the PTR soon.
