Peacock is creating a live-action series of Casper the Friendly Ghost called Casper, a horror-adventure series that reimagines the character from its comic origins. This coming-of-age series, written and executively produced by Kai Yu Wu, will explore what it means to truly be living. The story of Casper takes place in high school, where the friendly ghost finds himself in a mystery with secrets over a century old. Universal Content Productions and DreamWorks Animation will produce the live-action Casper series. Wu has worked on The Ghost Bride, the CW’s The Flash, Deception, Hannibal, and the Disney+ series American Born Chinese. DreamWorks acquired Classic Media in 2012, which includes the characters: Casper, Felix the Cat, Mr. Magoo, and many more. The Peacock horror-adventure series joins the other original programming, such as the Saved by the Bell revival, Bel-Air, and Trolls: TrollsTopia.
How Friendly Will Casper Be in This Modern Version of ‘Casper the Friendly Ghost’
Casper the Friendly Ghost has been a household name in comics and animation for decades, long before the Peacock horror-adventure series. In 1915, Seymour Reit and Joe Oriolo created the character, and the rights were later sold to Paramount Pictures’ Famous Studios. The sale left the original creators out of any future royalties for the character. There have been many animations, comics, and movies about the beloved character, including the 1995 film Casper, 1997’s Casper: A Spirited Beginning, and 1998’s Casper Meets Wendy. Now Peacock is bringing this character to new generations with the live-action horror-adventure series Casper. Will Peacock stay true to the “friendly ghost” part of Casper or make him more gritty? Old comics have been made into popular series, like Riverdale, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Nancy Drew. Peacock creating a live-action version of Casper could prove successful.
