Sony Interactive Entertainment has just announced that on July 18, the PlayStation 5 console had sold more than 10 million units globally since first launching on November 12, 2020. Meanwhile, it took the PS4 about 10 months to reach the same sales numbers. Early this year, in February, the company stated that it had shipped 4.5 million units of PS5 despite stock shortages.
Aside from hardware sales, Sony also revealed sales information of their in-house developed titles that helped move the console, including:
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (Insomniac Games): more than 6.5 million copies since November 12, 2020 launch.
- MLB The Show 21 (Sony San Diego Studio): more than 2 million copies across all platforms and more than 4 million players since April 16, 2021 launch.
- Returnal (Housemarque): more than 560,000 copies since April 30, 2021 launch.
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (Insomniac Games): more than 1.1 million copies since June 11, 2021 launch.
President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan thanked the player base for millions of PlayStation 5 sold and promised to keep the supply in check in a statement.
Although other high-profile PS5 must-haves like God of War: Ragnarok and Gran Turismo 7 are still a long way to come, Horizon Forbidden West from Guerrilla Games is planned to be shipped later this year.
