Whether you’re looking to fill a missing Pokedex entry or you’re trying to find its spectacular shiny, you’ll want to complete some Ho-oh raids while it’s around for a few days in Pokemon GO. This Legendary Pokemon is very powerful, so you’ll need to bring the right counters if you expect to win. Here are some of the best Pokemon to bring, and what moves they should know.

Counters

Ho-oh is a Fire/Flying-type Pokemon, which, luckily, means it has a double weakness to Rock-type moves. Pokemon like Rampardos, Terrakion, Tyranitar, Rhyperior, and Aerodactyl are all great choices. Rampardos is probably your best bet — especially if it has Smack Down and Rock Slide. For Tyranitar and Rhyperior, their best movesets contain their Community Day moves (Smack Down for Tyranitar and Rock Wrecker for Rhyperior). If you don’t have their Community Day moves, they’re still very useable, so don’t count them out just yet.

Some less-powerful options are pretty easy to find if you don’t have access to the top contenders. If you have Solrock, Lunatone, Golem, Aggron, Gigalith, or Sudowoodo, they’ll totally be fine if you have enough people in the raid.

If you don’t have a full team of Rock-type attackers, never fear. Ho-oh is also weak to Water and Electric-type attacks, so Pokemon like Kyogre, Raikou, the Water-type starters, and Electivire are all great choices as well. They won’t do as much damage as the double-effective Rock, but they are still completely usable. Don’t forget that Shadow Pokemon are a bit stronger, too.

Ho-oh’s Moves

Unfortunately, Ho-oh has quite a few moves of different types you’ll need to watch out for. For fast moves, it has access to Psychic-type Extrasensory, Steel-type Steel Wing, and Fire-type Incinerate. It also has Hidden Power, which changes type based on a few hidden factors. For charge moves, Ho-oh uses either Brave Bird, which is Flying-type, Solar Beam, a Grass move, or Fire Blast, a Fire-type move.

Catch CP

Due to its type combination, Ho-oh is boosted during both sunny and windy weather. Typically, its catch CP is between 2,119 and 2,207, but during favorable weather, it’ll sit between 2,649 and 2,759. This raid will require some extremely good Pokemon to do with two people, so try to get at least three or four, if possible.

If you’re looking to grab this Pheonix-like Pokemon to celebrate the rebirth of a new year, get out those raid passes (or, if you’re in lockdown, those remote passes). Ho-oh will be in raids until 10 AM local time on January 5.
